The deficit myth book5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Based on how politicians across parties have railed against the deficit, it’s understandable why anyone would get enraged when thinking about our government behaving imprudently. Whether the policy debate is health care, infrastructure, education, or climate change, the same question inevitably arises: But how are you going to pay for it? This bumper sticker captured a real frustration and anxiety that exists over our nation’s fiscal affairs, particularly with the size of the federal deficit. Like the driver with this bumper sticker, many people have come to believe that our government is flat broke and that its budget is unable to tackle the most important issues of our time. ![]() He wore red-and-white striped pants, a dark-blue jacket, and a top hat adorned with stars. ![]() It featured a man, standing slightly hunched, with his pants pockets turned inside out. I remember when I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a Mercedes SUV in 2008 while I made my one-hour commute from Lawrence, Kansas, to my job teaching economics at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. ![]() It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. ![]() Thompson 15 likes Like I am seeking to rescue the poor stockinger, the Luddite cropper, the obsolete hand-loom weaver, the utopian artisan, and even the deluded follower of Joanna Southcott, from the enormous condescension of posterity. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. The Conservative Party was created in the 1830s by Robert Peel. The working class did not rise like the sun at an appointed time. Its publication in 1963 was highly controversial in academia, but the work has become one of the most influential social commentaries every written. ![]() ![]() Thompson’s magnum opus, The Making of the English Working Class defined early twentieth-century English social and economic history, leading many to consider him Britain’s greatest postwar historian. Crucial to contemporary trends in all aspects of society, at the turn of the nineteenth century, these workers united into the class that we recognize all across the Western world today. Despite their lack of power and the indignity forced upon them by the upper classes, the working class emerged as England’s greatest cultural and political force. But the capitalist elite did not form the working class-the workers shaped their own creations, developing a shared identity in the process. ![]() ![]() A seminal text on the history of the working class by one of the most important intellectuals of the twentieth century.ĭuring the formative years of the Industrial Revolution, English workers and artisans claimed a place in society that would shape the following centuries. ![]()

Never Kiss a Stranger by Logan Chance5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “I never forgot it,” Weisz says over Zoom, sitting in front of an odd, slightly-off “picture window view” background that the Canadian filmmaker himself might have designed. The Oscar-winning actress doesn’t remember exactly when she saw Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller, but she definitely remembers the feeling of watching it for the first time. This is where Rachel Weisz comes into the picture. The only unsurprising aspects of all of this is that a) the film eventually ended up in the hands of David Cronenberg, because who else could possibly do this bizarro story justice, and b) it’s a disturbing, unsettling masterpiece. It goes without saying that the media had a field day, and that this stranger-than-fiction tale would inspire a bestselling piece of fiction ( Bari Wood and Jack Geasland’s 1977 novel Twins), that would in turn give birth to a movie adaptation. They would eventually be found together in a filthy apartment, both dead due to withdrawl symptoms from barbituates. One of them, Cyril, was characterized as slightly more socially awkward than his sibling, Stewart both were often referred to as “icy,” “aloof,” “remote.” It was rumored that the pair would sometimes switch places during the middle of exams with patients, one pretending to be the other. ![]() The brothers worked together at one of the finest hospitals in New York City and were a prominent part of Upper West Side high society. Once upon a time, there were two real-life identical-twin gynecologists. ![]()

The 4.50 from paddington5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() It was first published in the UK in five abridged instalments in John Bull magazine in October and November 1957, and in the US in thirty-six instalments in the Chicago Tribune from October to December 1957, under the title Eyewitness to Death. This is one of Christie’s comparatively rare books that contains no dedication. With Lucy’s help, and the professional expertise of Detective Inspector Craddock, Miss Marple gets to the bottom of it all eventually! As usual, if you haven’t read the book yet, don’t worry, I promise not to reveal whodunit – although there are a few plot spoilers I’m afraid! Is this the result of her overactive imagination? Her friend Miss Marple doesn’t think so, and engages the bright young cook and housekeeper Lucy Eyelesbarrow to do some snooping. However, no murders or missing women have been reported. In which Mrs McGillicuddy witnesses a murder from her train window as another train overtakes and she sees the back of a man strangling a woman. ![]()
